MINNEAPOLIS – This weekend, the Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team is taking part in the Minnesota Invite, a three-day competition featuring four NCAA Division I programs as well as the Knights, St. Olaf College, and select club swimmers from around the area.

Joining host No. 21-ranked University of Minnesota in creating a very tough field are fellow D-I programs from University of Utah (which is receiving votes in the D-I national poll), San Jose State University, and South Dakota State University. Each day the meet begins with morning prelims and concludes with the A, B, and C finals in the evening.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Carleton entry of Jack Heinzel (So./Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central); Ryan Wetzel (Jr./Salem, Ore./West Salem); Stevie Fitch (So./Redmond, Wash./Nikola Tesla Stem School); and Jack Dalluge (Jr./Waverly, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) combined on a time of 1:30.06, good for eighth place.

The 500-yard freestyle saw Dalluge swam in the “B” final and place 16th with a time of 5:07.15.

Allen Yuan (Fy./Cary, N.C./Raleigh Charter); Sam Darwish (Jr./Akron, Ohio./University School); Eric Meyer (Jr./Potomac, Md./Wootton); Fitch; Ben Greenvall (Sr./Branford, Conn./Branford); and Spencer Lekki (So./Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) each raced in the “C” final and all six improved upon their prelim times.

Andrew Chang (So./Vancouver, Wash./Union) and Heinzel swam in the “C” final of the 200-yard IM, placing 22nd and 23rd, respectively, with times of 2:04.62 and 2:04.72

Although the Knights had no one qualify for the finals of the 50-yard freestyle, Carleton closed day one with an eighth-place result in the 400-yard medley relay. Chang, Wetzel, Fitch, and Heinzel combined on a time of 3:47.20.

Action on Friday at the Jean Freeman Aquatics Center includes the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 200 medley relay. Saturday’s competition includes the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and 400 free relay.
