MINNEAPOLIS – The Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team entered the final day at the MIAC Championships only 10 points behind Saint John’s University for fourth place. The teams would be locked in a back-and-forth battle all day until the depth of the Knights rallowed them to elbow its way to fourth place in the team standings.

After three days of competition at the conference meet, Saint John’s possessed a narrow 267-257 scoring edge. As the day unfolded, each point became more and more critical.

The Knights had three scorers in the 1650-yard freestyle and moved in front, 276-267. Sam Darwish (Jr./Akron, Ohio./University School) placed ninth overall at 17:03.25, while Ben Greenvall (Sr./Branford, Conn./Branford) and Allen Yuan (Fy./Cary, N.C./Raleigh Charter) clocked times of 17:13.45 and 17:29.06, respectively, to finish in 11th and 13th places.

Benjamin Willmore (Fy./Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall), Ari Conati (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Minnetonka), Eli Offman (Fy./Toronto, Ont./Canada Greenwood College), and Alex Battiste (Sr./Northfield, Minn./Northfield) each qualified for the ‘B’ final on the 200-yard backstroke and finished in 11th through 14th places, respectively. Willmore touched at 2:00.01, narrowly edging Conati (2:00.06). Offman covered the distance in 2:02.85, while Battiste turned in a time of 2:05.59.

Jack Heinzel (So./Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) earned a fourth-place result in the 100-yard freestyle with his time of 46.43, while Nick Reeves (Jr./Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) joined him in the ‘A’ final and claimed seventh place at 47.34. Jack Dalluge (Jr./Waverly, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) finished 14th at 48.12. All three Knights swam faster during the morning prelims than they did in the finals.

Carleton held an eight-point advantage heading into the 200-yard breaststroke, but Saint John’s had three swimmers in the ‘A’ final and four scorers overall. The Knights tried to counter with three scoring swims of their own. Ryan Wetzel (Jr./Salem, Ore./West Salem) had a nearly four-second improvement on his prelims swim as he placed 10th after reaching the wall in 2:13.12.

Will Altaweel (So./Madison, Wis./Madison West) and Tristan Belzer (So./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) were 15th and 16th, respectively, after clocking times of 2:19.59 and 2:21.76.

Carleton entered this event trailing SJU by 25 points for fourth place, but the Knights had five swimmers score in the 200-yard butterfly and posted a 27-0 advantage over the Johnnies in the event, inching back ahead, 361-359.

Stevie Fitch (So./Redmond, Wash./Nikola Tesla Stem School) swam a time of 1:57.43 during the prelims before racing to a seventh-place result in the finals at 1:57.56. Eric Meyer (Jr./Potomac, Md./Wootton) placed 11th at 2:00.37, while Darwish, Andrew Chang (So./Vancouver, Wash./Union), and Christian Heuchert (Jr./Little Elm, Texas/Lone Star) claimed 13th, 14th, and 15th places, respectively. That trio reached the wall at 2:01.54, 2:01.97, and 2:02.65.

Just as it had the year before, the battle for fourth place in the standings came down to the final event of the meet: the 400-yard freestyle relay. Carleton’s entry posted a time of 3:09.17 that was good for fourth place in the event and allowed the Knights to hold onto fourth place in the standings.

Gustavus Adolphus (938.5 points) ran away from St. Thomas (774.5) to capture the team title, while St. Olaf (435), Carleton (391), and Saint John’s (387) rounded out the top five.
