After loss to DePauw, Knights bounce back against Nebraska Wesleyan

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Carleton College men’s tennis team reached the midpoint of its annual Spring Break trip after splitting a pair of matches on Monday. The Knights (8-4) lost 7-2 to regionally-ranked DePauw University but bounced back with a 9-0 triumph over Nebraska Wesleyan.

Mauricio Gonzalez (La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School) and Andrew Hwang (Brookfield, Wis./University School) notched the wins for Carleton against DePauw. In both cases, the juniors battled back after dropping the first set and eventually prevailed in the super tiebreaker. Gonzalez posted a 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6) account at third singles, while Hwang prevailed 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) at the fifth spot.

That duo led the way against Nebraska Wesleyan later in the afternoon, with Gonzalez winning 6-3, 6-1 at first singles and Hwang cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 result.

“Andrew’s triumphant return from a semester abroad in Italy has generated as many Instagram moments as Pharrell’s provocative choice of hats,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel.

After the Knights comfortably in front after sweeping the doubles contests and winning the other singles matches in straight sets, Nelson Wolf (Sr./Faibault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's School) came roaring back from a set down to triumph in his third-set tiebreaker 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) and complete the sweep.

"It did not look promising for Nelson after he dropped the first set,” said Zweifel, “but Nelson can make a deficit disappear faster than the funds in a Bitcoin account.”

First years Ezra Frankel (Lincoln, Mass./Belmont Hill School) and Nikita Fomichev (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn South) also posted wins against Nebraska Wesleyan in both singles and doubles

Carleton is 3-2 so far on the trip and has five more matches over the next three days. On Tuesday, March 25, the Knights face Centre College at 11:30 a.m. EDT followed by a 4:30 p.m. EDT contest with Oberlin College.
