Knights split opening matches of Spring Break

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Taking the court for its first competitions in more than three weeks, the Carleton College men’s tennis squad settled for a split on the first day of Spring Break action. The Knights were swept in doubles and dropped a 6-3 result to Allegheny College (Pa.) before bouncing back with a 7-2 victory over Asbury University (Ky.)

The Allegheny match started with singles, with the squads splitting the six team points. The Gators picked up the first victory at second singles, but Carleton countered with Patton McClelland’s (Fy./Rock Hill, S.C./Charlotte Latin School) 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the sixth spot.

Allegheny notched a win atop the lineup, but the Knights leveled the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Andrew Hwang (Jr./Brookfield, Wis./University School) at fifth singles.

Another Gator triumph, this one a three-set decision at fourth singles was answered by the Mauricio Gonzalez (Jr./La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School) 6-0, 7-6 result at the third slot.

That meant that the match would be decided in doubles, and the Gators swept that portion of the competition for the 6-3 win.

The day’s second match saw the Knights prevail in a pair of third-set super tiebreakers en route to a 7-2 victory.

Gonzalez and Ezra Frankel (Fy./Lincoln, Mass./Belmont Hill School) picked up an 8-4 win at scond doubles, while Nikita Fomichev (Fy./Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn South) and Ben Huang (Jr./Sammamish, Wash./Skyline) gave Carleton another point by virtue of their 8-6 victory.

The Knights won five of the six singles contests to put the match away. Erik Johnson (So./Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) prevailed 6-1, 6-4 at first singles. McClelland and Frankel recorded their second wins of the day with identical 6-2, 6-1 results at third and fourth singles, respectively.

Sam Bacon (Fy./Chapel Hill, N.C./Jordan) and Nelson Wolf (Sr./Faibault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's School) made their South Carolina debuts in dramatic fashion, each winning in the third set. After a slow start, Wolf got rolling and won 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-1). Bacon posted a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (14-12) result at fifth singles.

Carleton will face Buena Vista University (Iowa) on Saturday, March 22. That match begins at 6 p.m. local time.
