WINONA, Minn. – Thanks in part to impressive debuts from the three rookies on the roster, the Carleton College men’s tennis opened the 2018 campaign with a pair of victories. The Knights bested Saint Mary’s University, 8-1, and then knocked off UW-La Crosse by a 6-3 margin.

Newcomers Leo Vithoontien (Fy./Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School), Xander Zuczek (Fy./Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard), and Christof Zweifel (Fy./Northfield, Minn./Northfield) combined to go 7-0 on the day.

Against Saint Mary’s, Vithoontien won at first singles, 6-2, 6-1, while Zuczek and Zweifel helped Carleton to 8-3 triumphs at second and third doubles, respectively.

It was more of the same against UW-La Crosse. This time Vithoontien prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at second singles and paired with Sahil Chhugani (So./Rochester, Minn./Century) for an 8-1 victory at second doubles. Zuczek cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at sixth singles and again teamed with Kevin Hurley (Sr./Novi, Mich/Univ. of Detroit Jesuit) for an 8-2 triumph, this one at third doubles.

“Leo’s ruthless style of play can make an opponent’s lead vanish as quickly as a Stark family member at a royal wedding,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel.

Kevin Mei (Sr./Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Aaron Goodman (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) notched the most dominating performance of the afternoon, an 8-0 shutout of Saint Mary’s at first doubles.

“Like ordering from the McDonald’s dollar breakfast menu, Kevin and Aaron are willing to take some risks,” noted Zweifel.

Carleton will return to Winona next Saturday, Feb. 3 to face Carthage College in another non-conference match at 10:30 a.m.
