ELKHORN, Wis. – Sahil Chhugani (Jr./Rochester, Minn./Century) led the way with three victories  as the Carleton College men’s tennis team opened its visit to Wisconsin with an 8-1 victory over Carthage College and added a 9-0 sweep of Carroll University.

The depth of the Carleton roster was on display as all 12 Knights notched a victory on the day.

“Some of our lactose intolerant players were initially a little nervous about our weekend trip to America’s Dairyland, but we showed no signs of hesitation today,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel.

The day began with a morning match in Racine, Wis. where Carleton dispatched Carthage, 8-1.  Carleton’s top doubles tandem of Leo Vithoontien (So./Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Jordon O'Kelly (Sr./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) is ranked No. 19 in the nation and posted an 8-5 victory while Aaron Goodman (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) and Xander Zuczek (So./Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard) secured an 8-3 result.

The Knights swept the six singles matches, five of them in straight sets. Vithoontien showed why he is regionally ranked by blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0 atop the lineup. William Walsh (Fy./San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) lost the second-set tiebreaker but recovered to take the third-set super tiebreaker 6-3, 6-7, 10-5. Goodman, Chhugani, Xander Roti (Fy./Locust Valley, N.Y./Friends Academy), and Lewis White (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Breck) picked up the other victories.

Carleton then traveled to Elkhorn, Wis. where Carroll University was waiting, but the Knights had no intention of being gracious guests as they rolled to the 9-0 triumph.

Chhugani and Walsh won 8-2 at first doubles, while Jonas Lindholm-Uzzi (Jr./Germantown, N.Y./Red Hook) and Johnny Reichman (Sr./Shavano Park, Texas/Clark) prevailed 8-3, and the duo of Christof Zweifel (So./Northfield, Minn./Northfield) and Roti posted an 8-0 result at the third slot.

Chhugani battled for a 6-4, 6-3 victory at first singles, while teammates White, Lindholm-Uzzi, Reichman, Zweifel, and Andrew Lin (Jr./Princeton, N.J./Princeton) combined to drop only four games in completing the singles sweep. Lin was making his collegiate debut.

The barnstorming tour of Wisconsin continues on Sunday, Feb. 10, when the Knights visit UW-Whitewater. Carleton then has two more contests to be held in Eau Claire, Wis. next weekend.
