EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Leo Vithoontien (So./Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and William Walsh (Fy./San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) both went 4-0 on the day as the Carleton College men’s tennis team notched victories over tough regional opponents Augustana College (Ill.) and UW-Eau Claire by scores of 8-1 and 5-4. The Knights improved to 8-1 on the season.

“Playing a doubleheader against two top regional teams was quite a challenge,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “They guys were tested physically, and I have not doled out this much advice since I accidentally wore a red polo shirt at our local Target store.”

Vithootien teamed with Jordon O'Kelly (Sr./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) for victories at first doubles in both matches, while Walsh paired with first Xander Roti (Fy./Locust Valley, N.Y./Friends Academy) and later Jonas Lindholm-Uzzi (Jr./Germantown, N.Y./Red Hook) for his doubles triumphs.

Vithoontien, ranked No 15 in the country, demonstrated why he was an All-American last year as the sophomore improved to 5-0 against Division III singles opponents in 2019. Walsh added straight-set victories in both matches.

Versus Augustana, Aaron Goodman (Sr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) chipped in victories in both singles and doubles, where he paired with Xander Zuczek (So./Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard) on a dramatic 8-7 win. Roti and Lewis White (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Breck) contributed the other singles victories, with the latter prevailing in a super tiebreaker.

Against UW-Eau Claire, the Knights clawed to a 2-1 lead after doubles and captured the first three singles victories to clinch the match. The Blugolds won the finally three matches, two of them via super tiebreakers.

After going 5-0 in matches played in Wisconsin the last two weekends, Carleton will stay within southern Minnesota play a split doubleheader next Saturday, Feb. 23 as the Knights face Grinnell College at 11:00 a.m. and visit Bethel University at 5:30 p.m.
