ST. PETER, Minn. — The Carleton Men’s Tennis Team opened the year at the USTA/ITA Regional and the Midwest Open, both being held at Gustavus Adolphus College. These single elimination tournaments are the only events the Knights participate in during the fall season with the regular season beginning in the winter.

In the USTA/ITA Regional Singles Championship, Andrew Hwang (Fy./Brookfield, Wis./ Skyline) had a very strong showing for the Knights. Hwang advanced all the way to the round of eight from an original field of 128 players. Hwang defeated his first three opponents in straight sets. The fourth match was more difficult for Hwang, but he was still able to defeat Vande Linde of UW-Eau Claire 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(7-4). With only seven other players still standing, Hwang experienced his first lost to Jeff Lotz of Carthage College.

In other USTA/ITA action, Avery Rux (Fy./Austin, Texas/Home School) also advanced to the third round of play, until he finally fell to Ramesh Karki of Luther College 6-0, 6-3. Jon Aranda (Sr./Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola), Dan Vollman (Sr./Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest), and Peter Dunn (Sr./Winnetka, Ill./North Shore Country Day) all won their first matches to advance to the second round. The next round proved more difficult for all three Knights, and none were able to advance past the second round.

In the USTA/ITA Regional Doubles Championships, no duo was able to advance past the second round. The team of Hwang and Vollman beat their first opponent 9-7 before falling to Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley of Luther College 8-4 in the second round. Similarly, the duo of Rux and Dunn defeated their first round opponent 8-3, but they were unable to move past the second round falling to David Croonquist and Robert Becker of Hamline University 8-3.

In the Midwest Open, the Knights had a strong showing from many players.  Krishna Vege (Jr./Rochester, Minn./Mayo) Mauricio Gonzalez (Fy./La Pax, Bolivia/American Cooperative School), McCoy Becker (So./Ojai, Calif./Thacher School) , and Paul Elbow (Fy./Madison, Wis./Madison West) all reached the fourth round in the Midwest Open Singles Championships. Vege had a bye in the first round, and in the next two rounds he defeated his opponents 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 and 6-2, 6-3 respectively. Vege was finally beaten 6-1, 6-2 by the number one seed, Ryan Hallsten, from Gustavus.  Gonzalez and Elbow also had success in their first collegiate tournament both finishing 3-1. After his first round bye, Becker defeated his opponents in straight sets, until reaching the fourth round where he fell to Logan Peterson of Gustavus 6-1, 6-1.

The Knights will have plenty of time to rest up before their season gets under this winter.
