WINONA, Minn. – McCoy Becker (Jr./Ojai, Calif./Thacher School) went a perfect 3-0 on the day in helping the Carleton College men’s tennis team notch victories over Luther College and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Both matches were decided by scores of 6-3.

"McCoy's game plan is about as secret as a CIA director’s email account,” said Carleton head coach Stephen Zweifel. “Everybody knows he will simply run down every ball on the court."

Against Luther, the No. 12-ranked team in the region, Becker teamed with Erik Johnson (Fy./Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) for an 8-4 triumph at third doubles. Austin Jiang (Sr./Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and Alex Chin (Sr./Hingham, Mass./Hingham) added an 8-3 win at the second spot.

Once play moved to singles, Jiang, Chin, Becker, and Andrew Hwang (So./Brookfield, Wis./University School) picked up victories. Becker prevailed 6-4, 7-6 but the most dramatic contest came atop the lineup as Jiang topped Ramesh Karki, the No. 20 player in the central region, rallying for a 6-7, 6-1, 10-5 triumph.

"With wins at #1 singles and #2 doubles, Austin was our Sherpa as we managed to come out on top against a tough Luther College team," noted Zweifel.

The Knights got off to a slow start in the day’s second contest. “Starting the match against UW-La Crosse by losing two of the three doubles matches was as unwelcome as a Go Daddy television commercial,” said Zweiel. “But the boys bounced back in fine style by winning five of the six singles matches."

Leading the rally was Becker and his 6-4, 6-2 win at fourth singles. Chin and Mauricio Gonzalez (So./La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School) both won third-set tiebreakers to take their matches.

The Knights return to MIAC play on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 12:30 p.m. when they take on Macalester College.
