DECORAH, Iowa – The Carleton College men’s tennis team opened its visit to the state of Iowa with a 7-2 triumph over Luther College in a matchup of regionally-ranked squads. Paul Cooper (Jr./Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) displayed a flair for the dramatic, winning his first doubles match, 9-8, then rallying from a set down in his singles match to prevail 6-7, 6-4, 10-6.

The win was the sixth straight by the Knights, who are ranked No. 10 in the central region. Luther, ranked No. 12 by the ITA, had won 10 of its previous 11 matches.

Cooper paired with Peter Dunn (Sr./Winnetka, Ill./North Shore Country Day) for the close win to start the day. "Peter and Paul came through with a tough win at number one doubles. I was impressed with how well they disguised their intelligent play," said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel.

Andrew Hwang (Fy./Brookfield, Wis./University School) and Austin Jiang (Jr./Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) were victorious at third doubles to give the Knights a 2-1 lead midway through the match.

In addition to Cooper’s victory, Carleton won the top four singles matches. Dunn triumphed 6-3, 6-3, while Avery Rux (Fy./Austin, Texas/Home School), Hwang, and Jiang each dropped only four games during their straight-set wins.

"I'm not implying that Avery plays overly long points,” Zweifel said, “but I was able to finish Atlas Shrugged during his third game."

Carleton’s road trip through the Hawkeye State concludes on Sunday, April 15 with a meeting against regional No. 17 Coe College.
