HILTON HEAD, S.C. – One day after being forced off the court by severe weather, the Carleton College men’s tennis team faced difficult circumstances again on Wednesday morning. This time, windy weather coupled with a tough, nationally-ranked NCAA Division II opponent proved to be more than the Knights could handle in absorbing a 7-2 loss to University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Carleton slipped to 11-2 on the season, with both losses coming against nationally-ranked opponents.

The Knights first point came from the doubles pairing of Kevin Hurley (Sr./Novi, Mich/Univ. of Detroit Jesuit) and Xander Zuczek (Fy./Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard) with an 8-6 triumph at the third spot in the order.

“Kevin and Xander are often compared to LaMelo and LiAngelo Ball,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “They bring an inordinate amount of swagger to the court and often look like they are lost in a foreign country.”

Leo Vithoontien (Fy./Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) continued his dominating rookie season with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory atop the lineup. That result pushed his singles record to 11-0.

“When you compete against Leo, your sense of security becomes as vulnerable as Facebook’s,” noted Zweifel.

The team score was nearly much tighter as Zuczek and Aaron Goodman (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) both rallied from a set down to force their singles matches into super tiebreakers.

Looking ahead at the schedule, Carleton will resume its rain-interrupted match against Goucher College on Thursday, followed by a Friday contest versus Erskine College—another D-II program. The Knights’ Spring Break trip wraps up with a matchup against a regionally-ranked UW-Whitewater squad on Saturday, March 24.
