ROCHESTER, Minn. – It had been two weeks since the Carleton College men’s tennis team played a match, but the Knights showed no signs of rust in dispatching of Luther College, 7-2, in a matchup of regionally-ranked squads. The Knights (15-2 overall) are ranked No. 9 in the Central Region, while the Norse (13-3) were listed at No. 14.

“After a two-week layoff from competition—and having to play a quality team like Luther—I entered this match as on edge as a poodle on a United Airlines flight,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “But our guys settled down nicely and played some excellent tennis.”

Carleton won two of the three doubles matches as the Knights’ duo of Jordon O'Kelly (Jr./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Leo Vithoontien (Fy./Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School)—the No. 6-ranked tandem in the region—prevailed 8-3. Meanwhile, the pairing of Kevin Hurley (Sr./Novi, Mich/Univ. of Detroit Jesuit) and Xander Zuczek (Fy./Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard) improved to 12-0 this season with an 8-6 triumph.

The Knights prevailed in five of the singles matches as well. Vithoontien is ranked No. 5 in the region and notched another triumph as he posted a 6-1, 6-2 decision to move to 14-0 this year.

Kevin Mei (Sr./Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and O’Kelly found similar success, winning by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 at the next two spots in the lineup.

Aaron Goodman (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park) improved his career singles record during dual matches to 40-9 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the fifth spot in the order.

Sahil Chhugani (So./Rochester, Minn./Century) notched his 11th singles win of the season—second on the squad—with his 6-4, 6-4 result at the sixth slot.

The next match on Carleton’s schedule is slated to be against Hamline University on Saturday, April 14 at 10 a.m.
