ST. PETER, Minn. – Senior Kevin Mei (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) posted a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles as the No. 40-ranked Carleton College men’s tennis team visited No. 8-ranked Gustavus Adolphus. The hosts ultimately claimed an 8-1 victory, but the Knights played several close matches.

This was the 300th consecutive regular-season conference victory for Gustavus, a streak that dates back to 1985. The Knights did beat the Gusties, 6-3, in the 2010 MIAC Playoffs, becoming the only team besides Gustavus to claim a MIAC regular or postseason title since 1989.

“Although today wasn’t a repeat of UMBC versus Virginia, our guys put up a wonderful fight against a top-10 team in the nation,” said Carleton head coach.

Mei topped Zach Ekstein, the reigning MIAC Athlete-of-the-Week and No. 11 singles player in the central region.

“Watching Kevin in his senior year has brought tears of sadness and tears of joy,” Zweifel said. “Kevin is to Carleton Tennis what James Harden is to beards.”

Other tightly-contest matches were turned in by Aaron Goodman (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park), Sahil Chhugani (So./Rochester, Minn./Century), Kevin Hurley (Sr./Novi, Mich/Univ. of Detroit Jesuit), and Xander Zuczek (Fy./Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard)

Goodman rallied from a set down to send his fifth singles match to a super tiebreaker before ultimately falling short by a 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 tally. Chhugani came up short 6-4, 6-4 at the sixth singles slot.

The tandem of Hurley and Zuczek saw its win streak snapped at 13 after an 8-6 setback at third singles.

The Knights will regroup and take the court on Sunday, April 22 for a 2 p.m. match at Bethel University. A victory for Carleton will clinch another trip to the MIAC Playoffs.
