ST. PAUL, Minn. – Despite a late lineup change, the Carleton College notched a 7-2 victory over Macalester College on Monday evening. Rookies Xander Zuczek (Westerly, R.I./St. Bernard) and Leo Vithoontien (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) posted wins in both singles and doubles.

The Knights’ tandem of Vithoontien and Jordon O'Kelly (Jr./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) is ranked fifth in the central region and moved to 8-2 at first doubles this season after registering an 8-3 victory. Zuczek and Kevin Hurley (Sr./Novi, Mich/Univ. of Detroit Jesuit) improved their season doubles mark to 14-1 with an 8-1 triumph at the third spot.

Vithoontien, also the ranked No. 5 singles player in the region, improved to 16-1 overall this season following his 6-3 and 6-2 triumph at first singles.

Kevin Mei (Sr./Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) was a late scratch from second singles, necessitating the next five players on the roster to move up a slot in the starting lineup.

Andrew Qi (Jr./Auckland, New Zealand/Saint Kentigern), Aaron Goodman (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park), and Sahil Chhugani (So./Rochester, Minn./Century) won at the third through fifth spots in the lineup. Each prevailed in straight sets, dropping a total of seven games during those three matches.

Zuczek moved into the singles starting lineup and stayed undefeated against D-III opponents with is 6-3, 6-3 victory.

“Xander got the call at the last minute and put in a stellar performance,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “With his powerful game, his points are as short-lived as a presidential cabinet appointment.”

The Knights have two regular-season matches remaining. They will host cross-town rival St. Olaf College for a 4 p.m. contest on Friday, April 27. Carleton visits Saint John’s the following day and will then turn its attention to the MIAC Playoffs that begin on Wednesday, May 2.
