SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Carleton College men’s tennis team faced a tough Amherst College squad on Saturday and got an up close look at why the Lord Jeffs are ranked No. 19 in the nation.

Amherst surrendered only six games total in sweeping the three doubles matches, then won all six singles contests.

Paul Cooper (Sr./Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) got the starting nod at No. 1 singles for the second time in his career and put up the toughest fight before falling 7-5, 6-2.

"When the situation calls for a bullet-proof vest, you can count on Paul to wear a cardigan,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “He simply has no fear against the toughest opponents."

Andrew Hwang (So./Brookfield, Wis./University School) dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision at the second spot, and Amherst posted convincing results at the other four slots.

"Our spring break trip to southern California has been phenomenal - perfect weather, plenty of tennis, and the team has really bonded during our many off-court adventures. It has been an excellent preparation for the strong competition we will face when we return to Minnesota,” Zweifel said.
