Knights Unable to Blemish Kohawks Perfect Season

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Carleton College men’s tennis team lost a match to a regional opponent for the first time this season, falling 7-2 at Coe College. Austin Jiang (Sr./Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) posted the Knights' lone victory in singles against a Kohawk squad that improved to 24-0 this season.

Jiang won his third straight singles match after missing nearly a month of competition due to injury. Today, he posted a 7-6, 6-3 decision.

"Austin's late-season resurgence has been a shot in the arm to the team,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “His ground stroke winners were as frequent as tattoos are in the NBA."

The team score doesn’t reflect how close this match was as the Knights saw four singles matches require third sets, and in each case the Kohawks pulled out the victory. Paul Cooper (Sr./Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central), Andrew Hwang (So./Brookfield, Wis./University School), Erik Johnson (Fy./Grand Forks, N.D./Red River), and Nelson Wolf (Jr./Faibault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's School) each tasted defeat in this manor.

Johnson and Christian Nagy (Fy./Fairway, Kans./Pembroke Hill School) picked up an 8-5 victory at third doubles for Carleton’s other point.

"This spring season we have had to battle many elements,” Zweifel said. “Usually the elements hydrogen and oxygen. But today we also ran into the Kohawks. Hats off to their wonderful season."

Carleton travels to St. Olaf College on Wednesday, April 17. A victory for the Knights will secure a spot in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs.
