Knights Win Two Events in SoCal

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — A handful of student-athletes from the Carleton College men’s track and field team took part in competition on Friday. Jerry Cook-Gallardo (Fy./Moscow, Idaho/Moscow) and Jonah Barry (Jr./Madison, Wis./Madison West) both won events at the Santa Barbara Easter Relays.

Cook-Gallardo won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.3, which is tops among Division III runners this season. Barry paced four Carleton racers in the 1500-meter run with a finishing time of 3:59.99, to rank fifth in the nation and edge teammate Noah Laack-Veeder (Sr./Madison, Wis./LaFollette) by one second. Joe Haase (Jr./Fitchburg, Wis./West) and Thor Laack-Veeder (Sr./Madison, Wis./LaFollette) placed sixth and seventh out of 31 runners in the event.

Colby Seyferth (Sr./Banks, Ore./Banks) and Evan McNeil (Sr./Burnsville, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) were wrapping up the inaugural Jim Klein Decathlon at nearby Westmont College.

Seyferth was putting together an impressive score until he sustained an injury warming up for the javelin, the ninth event of the competition. Due to injury, he did not finish the final event, the 1500-meter run, and yet he still finished with 5,670 points, good for 13th place in the competition and the second-best score in Division III so far this season. McNeil totaled 5,752 points to finish 12th.

Haase, Cook-Gallardo, and the Laack-Veeders will race at the Westmont Collegiate Classic on Saturday, March 21.
