STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- Lucas Mueller (Fy./St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy) earned a trip to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a fantastic race at the Pointer Final Qualifier, a last-chance meet held on Saturday. Mueller won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:21.48, a 14 second-improvement over his victorious time at the conference meet last weekend.

Mueller posted a 24-second margin of victory on Saturday. His time—when converted to account for the banked track to be used at nationals this year—is 8:15.72, which would be seventh-fastest in the country.

Donson Cook-Gallardo (Sr./Moscow, Idaho/Moscow), who was sick during the MIAC Championships and competed in only one event, also raced at Saturday’s meet in hopes of moving up the national leaderboard. He placed second out of 22 runners with a time of 1:54.02, an improvement of 0.46 seconds off his season best.

His time in Saturday’s race adjusts down to 1:52.42, which would be 18th in the country. The top 15 declared men in each event qualify for the national meet. In order for Cook-Gallardo to make a return trip to the NCAA Championships, he will need at least three runners ahead of him in the national rankings for the event to elect not to run the 800-meter distance at nationals, presumably so those student-athletes can focus on other events.

The final list of meet participants will be available via by 9:00 a.m. ET on Monday, March 5.
