Liam Sullivan finishes in ninth place at MIAC Decathlon

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – After completing both days and all 10 events of the MIAC Decathlon, Liam Sullivan (So./Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) secured a ninth-place result.

There were fifteen entrants in the competition, but two of them dropped out on day one.

In Thursday’s opening event, the 100-meter dash, Sullivan placed second with a time of 11.65 seconds good for 721 points, his highest point total of the day.

The 100m was followed by the long jump, in which Sullivan measured a jump of 5.47 meters. He earned 475 points in the effort.

Next up was the shot put in which he threw 10.37 meters, which earned him a tie for sixth place and 508 points.

The penultimate event was the high jump; Sullivan jumped 1.56 meters, good for 434 more points.

Sullivan finished day one strong, claiming a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.49 seconds, tallying 703 points.

The sophomore sat in eighth place with 2,841 points midway through the MIAC Decathlon.

Sullivan started day two with a time of 18.14 in the 110 meter hurdles, earning him 511 points. He followed that up with a 25.43 meter throw in the discus. That throw was good enough for 11th and 375 points.

Next up was the pole vault, in which Sullivan notched an sixth-place finish for his mark of 3.40 meters. The result afforded him 406 more points.

In the javelin throw, the next-to-last event, Sullivan turned in a solid performance. He took seventh place with a throw of 38.41 meters and reaped 419 points.

The 10th and final event was the 1500-meter run, in which Sullivan crossed the finish line in a time of 4:46.94. He took fifth place and 637 points as a result. After tallying all 10 events, Sullivan owned 5,279 points, good for ninth place.

He established season bests in the shot put and 400-meter dash, while on day two he posted career bests in the pole vault and 1500-meter run.

St. Thomas senior Preston Huddleston won the two-day decathlon with a personal-best score of 6,643 points and now ranks No. 7 in Division III.
