BOSTON – For the second time in as many days, a member of the Carleton College men’s track and field team earned All-America recognition. On day two of the NCAA Indoor Championships, sophomore Lucas Mueller (St. Paul, Minn./Nova Classical Academy) collected the honor as he finished sixth in the finals of the 3000-meter run.

Matt Wilkinson (So./Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) captured All-America status on Friday evening with his sixth-place finish in the 5000-meter run.

On Saturday, Mueller bettered his previous career-best time by nearly four seconds, crossing the line at 8:17.50 as he became the first person in team history to earn All-America recognition at the 3000-meter distance.

The race was quite physical throughout the first half of the race as runners jostled for position. Mueller shifted between second or third place until shortly after the midpoint in the race. He moved into the lead for the next three laps but was overtaken with 700 meters remaining in the event.

Mueller pushed the pace once again and re-gained the lead with 500 meters still to run. At the start of the bell lap Craig Morgan of Haverford moved in front and pulled away from the field en route to claiming the individual title. Mueller held on to a podium spot in what became a crowd heading to the finish line. Fourth through ninth places were separated by 0.83 second.

This was the second second All-America performance of the 2018-19 academic year for both Mueller and Wilkinson. They finished 17th and 38th, respectively, at the 2018 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
