LA CROSSE, Wis. – Competing at the NCAA Final Qualifier on the campus of UW-La Crosse on Thursday, Joey Cook-Gallardo (Jr./Moscow, Idaho) won his heat of the 800-meter run, setting a new personal record in 1:53.29 and climbing to the top of the 2019 MIAC leaderboard in the process.

The junior emerged from the pack around the 200-meter mark and didn’t relinquish the lead from there. His time of 1:53.29 was good for 6th place overall in the field of 20 runners.

After taking 4th place in the 800-meter run at the MIAC Outdoor Championships less than a week ago, Cook-Gallardo bested all three runners who finished ahead of him at that meet. They included Carl Kozlowski of St. Thomas, who previously held the top 800 time in the conference at 1:53.34. Also, he now owns the 7th-best 800 time in Carleton track & field history.

The Knights’ last hurrah of the 2019 season will take place from Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
