Davis & Laack-Veeder Win at Ole Open

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In its final competition before the conference championships, the Carleton College men’s indoor track and field team won a pair of races at the Ole Open Qualifier.

Noah Laack-Veeder (Fy./Madison, Wis./ LaFollette) trimmed nearly five seconds off his season-best time in winning the 1,000-meter run at 2:30.50. That mark ranks No. 2 all-time at Carleton behind the 2:29.67 mark posted by Dan Casper '89. Laack-Veeder is currently ranked fourth in the MIAC this season and continues his incredible rookie campaign, which now includes: a school record in the 600-meter dash, the freshman record in the 800-meter run, and Carleton’s second-best mark at the 1000-meter distance.

Bobby Davis (Jr./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) ran a nearly perfect race and cut almost 19 seconds off his seed time in winning the 3,000-meter run at 8:53.94. Guthrie Cunningham (So./Finland, Minn./East) placed fifth in the event at 9:02.26 as he cut almost 30 seconds off his previous best time and qualified for next weekend's MIAC Championships.

Other highlights for the Knights include a trio of third-place showings. Kian Flynn (Sr./Otis, Ore./Taft) continued his solid senior campaign with a third-place result in the mile run. He posted a personal-best time of 4:26.50. Dylan Cheever (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) and Chris Williams (Fy./Chicago, Ill./Rowe-Clark Academy) tied for third in the high jump at 1.88 meters (6 feet, 2 inches). That height was a personal-best for Williams.

Marcus Huderle (So./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a new personal-best time of 1:57.73. Arafat Akinlabi (Fy./Chicago, Ill./Hubbard) was fourth in the 600-meter dash at 1:27.38, a season-best mark.

Jordan Washam (So./Cincinnati, Ohio/Groton) won his heat in the 400-meter dash and placed fifth overall with a season-best time of 52.15. Jordan Soteros (So./Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle) was fifth in the pole vault with a personal-best height of 4.35 meters (14 feet, 3 inches).

Evan McNeil (Fy./Burnsville, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) continued his preparations for the MIAC Heptathlon with PR's in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles.

In the shorter sprints, Josh Estes (So./Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) continued his improvement, dropping his 60-meter dash best time down to 7.28. Garo Anguiano-Sainz (Fy./Chico, Calif./Chico) won his heat in the 200-meter dash with a PR of 23.99.

The MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held March 1-3 at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. The heptathlon and pentathlon get things started on Thursday, while the other events begin at 3:30 on Friday.
