NORTHFIELD, Minn. — With only two meets remaining in the regular season, the Carleton College men’s indoor track and field team looked to gain momentum with a strong showing at the Tostrud Open hosted by St. Olaf College.
With a large contingent of friends and family looking on, high-jumper Peter Dehkes (Fy./Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) put on a team-leading performance. The rookie’s leap of 1.95 meters—nearly six feet, five inches—gave him his third victory in as many week and ranks third in both school history and the MIAC this season.
Evan McNeil (Jr./Burnsville, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) continued the strong off-track performances by clearing 4.20 meters in the pole vault, a new personal best by nearly two inches. He placed third overall and currently holds the seventh-best pole vault in Carleton indoor track and field history.
Adan Nunez-Frausto (Sr./Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) and Jiatao Cheng (Jr./Gurnee, Ill./Warren) added PR’s in the weight throw as they placed third and seventh, respectively, at 14.95 and 13.60 meters. Nunez-Frausto improved upon his personal best by more than two and a half feet, which Cheng best his top mark by more than four feet.
The team had similarly impressive performances on the track, where a number of competitors set personal records.
Thor Laack-Veeder (Jr./Madison, Wis./LaFollette) was one of them. He took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.72.
Teammate Walter Edstrom (Fy./Plano, Texas/Plano West) matched Laack-Veeder’s performance with a new PR and a second-place finish as he crossed the line at 2:33.59 in the 1000 meters.
Gustav Danielsson (Jr./Westfield, N.J./Westfield) kept the personal-best trend alive with a 4:43.45 finish in the mile. When the distance nearly doubled, Evan Olawsky (So./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) kept the pace up with a personal-best 9:20.90 finish in the 3000-meter run.
Sprinter Evan Howard (So./St. Petersberg, Fla./Home School) took third in the 60-meter dash, finishing in personal-best 7.20 seconds.
Joe Haase (So./Fitchburg, Wis./West), Noah Laack-Veeder (Jr./Madison, Wis./LaFollette), and Arafat Akinlabi (Jr./Chicago, Ill./Hubbard) all notched season bests in the 600-meter dash.
The Knights will return to the same facility next Friday, Feb. 28 for the Ole Open qualifier. Events begin at 4 p.m.
