GENEVA, Ohio — On day one of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Carleton College junior Donson Cook-Gallardo (Moscow, Idaho/Moscow) won his heat of the 1500-meter to advance to Saturday’s event finals.

Racing in very rainy conditions, Cook-Gallardo moved to the front immediately and led nearly the entire race. It was a tightly-contested battle throughout, as 9 of the 10 runners in the heat were within a half-second of one another with only 400 meters remaining.

With about 100 meters to go, Cook-Gallardo was briefly passed, but Carleton junior surged back in front down the homestretch and went on to win the heat with a time of 3:52.87.

Cook-Gallardo will next turn his attention to the prelims of the 800-meter run, which both he and teammate Ben Withbroe (Sr./Takoma Park, Md./Albert Einstein) will race on Friday, May 26 at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT.
