LA CROSSE, Wis. –It seems that when Donson Cook-Gallardo (Moscow, Idaho/Moscow) is at his best, even Mother Nature cannot slow him down. The Carleton College senior had to wait out a lengthy weather delay before earning a spot in the finals of the 800-meter run at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Competition on Friday was halted when a thunderstorm rolled through the area. Cook-Gallardo’s race did not start until nearly three hours after the originally scheduled time.

When racing finally resumed, Cook-Gallardo punched his ticket to the finals by winning the first of three heats. He clocked a season-best time of 1:50.28, the top time during the preliminary round.

Demonstrating the need to run well in the prelims, the group of 11 runners who did not advance to the event finals this year includes four of the top-9 seeds entering the race, including No. 2 seed George Papoulis of UMass-Dartmouth.

Only three runners from the 800-meter finals at the 2017 NCAA Championships will be racing again this year: Cook-Gallardo, Andrew Sharp of Greenville, and Matt Molinaro of Ohio Northern. Cook-Gallardo finished second in this event at last year’s NCAA Championships by only 0.01 second.
