Outdoor Season Opens at San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Carleton College men’s track and field team opened the outdoor portion of its 2013 schedule at the Johnny Mathis Invitational hosted by San Francisco State University. The Knights top performances of the day came in the 5000-meter run.

Hart Hornor (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) was the first of a trio of Knights across the line in the 5K, placing sixth overall with a time of 15:13.74. Juniors Marcus Huderle (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Jacob Hoerger (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) finished eighth and ninth in a field of 34 racers, recording times of 15:18.29 and 15:19.24, respectively.

This was the third season in the last decade that the Knights had three racers post times under 15:20, but the first time over that stretch that a trio accomplished the feat at the same meet. Carleton also had three 5K times under 15:20 in 2004 when Matt Hooley, Dan Bucy, and Chris Lundberg notched the top three times in the MIAC. The other time came four years later as Joe Sepe, Charlie Gamble, and Quentin Kennedy played beat the clock.

In Saturday’s meet, twins Noah Laack-Veeder (So./Madison, Wis./Robert M Lafollette) and Thor Laack-Veeder (So./Madison, Wis./Robert M Lafollette) were busy, turning in solid efforts in the 800- and 1500-meter runs as well as holding down two spots in the 4x400-meter relay that finished second to University of California-Berkeley, one of four Division I programs competing at the meet.

In the relay, C.J. Dale (Sr./Fox Island, Wash. /Charles Wright Academy) ran leadoff and Colby Seyferth (So./Banks, Ore./Banks) added an outstanding anchor leg as the Knights crossed the line at 3:27.70.

Dale added a personal record (16.27) in the 110-meter hurdle final.

The Knights take part in two more Bay Area competitions before concluding their Spring Break trip. Next up is the California Multi-Events Meet on March 27-28 followed by the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday, March 29.
