Bagley’s gem wasted as Wildcats sweep Knights

ST. PAUL, Minn. —  The Carleton College softball team opened a full weekend of action with a doubleheader at St. Catherine University. The Knights could not sustain an early lead in the dropping the opener, 6-4, then watched the Wildcats pickup a 1-0, walkoff victory in game two.

Jenny Ramey (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) opened the game with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Katrina Harper (Sr./Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights), who came home later in the frame.

The second inning played out in a very similar fashion for Carleton with a walk to Ramey, a stolen base, and a RBI single by Harper making the score 3-0 in favor of the visitors. Carleton tacked on another tally two batter later as Keelin Davis (So./Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) doubled home Harper.

St. Catherine sliced the deficit in half with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of second and scored four more time in the third. The biggest blows of that inning were a pair of two-out, run-scoring singles. That rounded out the scoring for both teams with the Wildcats claiming a 6-4 triumph.

Game two was a pitchers’ duel from the start. Kaitlin Bagley (Sr./Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, while Rachel Thompson yielded just a single over the same stretch.

Bagley worked around a leadoff double in the bottom of the fifth, then struck out two batters with a runner in scoring position in the sixth. Meanwhile, Thompson continued handcuffing the Carleton batters.

Finally in the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats strung together two singles, a sacrifice bunt, and an error for the 1-0, walkoff win.

Bagley fanned six and walked one while yielding the run on four hits.

Carleton travels to Augsburg College for a pair of games on Sunday, April 13. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
