NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team played its final home games of 2017 on Friday afternoon and ended up with a doubleheader split with visiting Saint Mary’s University. The Knights took the opener, 5-4, before the Cardinals responded with an 11-4 victory in game two.

In game one, Carleton (16-16, 9-11 MIAC) was held without a hit until the fourth inning, but Katie Eppard’s (Jr./Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) single to centerfield got the Knights rolling, and they scored twice that inning and three more times in the following stanza en route to the win.

Trailing 1-0 at the time, Eppard came home on Mia Orans’ (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./Piedmont) run-scoring grounder. Emily Boxrud (So./Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) singled home Sam Kile (So./Elk Grove, Calif./Consumnes Oaks) to give Carleton the lead.

An inning later, consecutive singles by Molly Steinberg (Jr./Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard Westlake), Ari Zuaro (Jr./Scotch Plain, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood), and Anna Lauko (So./Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) set the stage for Carleton’s three-run rally.

The Cardinals (11-24, 5-14 MIAC) narrowed the gap with a two-out, two-run double in the sixth, but Kile was able to close out her 12th victory of the season, the most by a Knight since Andrea Carroll won 15 times in 2002.

In the nightcap, Saint Mary’s held a 3-2 lead until out-scoring Carleton 8-2 during the fourth through sixth innings to secure the 11-4 triumph.

Eppard collected three hits to pace the Knights, while Corrie Lucchesi (Jr./Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) and Kile each contributed multi-hit affairs, as did Natalie Maurice (Fy./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), who added 2 RBIs.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton closes the season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, April 29
