DUNDAS, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team swept Martin Luther College in the season lid-lifter for both squads. The Knights rallied for victories by scores of 4-2 and 12-4 (6 innings).

“We will take the two W’s,” said Carleton head coach Amy Erickson. “It was nice to see our pitchers come out and throw solid innings. Our batters did a good job of making adjustments throughout the games and sticking with our game plan, even when we dug ourselves a bit of a hole early the games.

“It was definitely a starting point for the season as we look to just get better and better with each day of practice and games.”

Last year, Carleton returned to the postseason despite going 3-12 in games where the opponents scored first. The Knights notched two such victories on the season’s first day.

Martin Luther touched Carleton starter Sam Kile (Sr./Elk Grove, Calif./Consumnes Oaks) for a run in the top of the first, but the Knights responded with three tallies of their own in the bottom of the stanza. Tegan Carlson (So./Benton City, Wash./Kiona-Benton City) delivered a RBI triple, while Natalie Maurice (Jr./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Madison Collins (Fy./Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) contributed run-scoring grounders.

That proved to be enough run support for Kile, who fanned seven in the complete-game effort. She did not yield a hit over her final 4.2 frames.

Martin Luther scratched out four runs, two of them unearned, to begin the nightcap. Once again Carleton responded. RBI doubles by Sarah Ogle (Sr./San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) and Brooke McKelvey (Fy./West Linn, Ore./West Linn) keyed a three-run rally in the bottom of the second.

Carleton tied it in the fourth inning on Maris Daleo’s (So./Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) double into the left field corner, before blowing the game open with a five-run outburst in the fifth. The hosts closed out the contest with three more tallies in the sixth.

First-years Collins, McKelvey, Trina Eichel (Alameda, Calif./Alameda), and Michaela Jellsey (Yuba City, Calif./Yuba City) went a combined 9-for-13 with six runs scored and seven RBI.

Ogle came on in relief and tossed 4.0 scoreless frames of 1-hit ball to pick up the win.

Carleton will host Bethany Lutheran College for a primetime doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 23. First pitch from the Dundas Dome is slated for 7:00 p.m.
