CLERMONT, Fla. – After nearly a month away from competition, the Carleton College softball team finally got its Spring Break trip started with a pair of games in the Sunshine State. The Knights dropped their Florida opener against Rutgers University-Newark by a 3-1 tally before bouncing back and trouncing SUNY-Cobleskill, 12-0 (5 inn.), in the day’s second contest.

GAME 1 RECAP

The Carleton (5-1) bats were a little slow to wake up from their long layoff as the Knights drew seven walks but collected only four hits and left nine runners on base.

The Scarlet Raiders pushed across two runs in the third inning thanks to a triple by Brielle Mattiello, then tacked on an insurance tally in the seventh.

Jackie Lara went the distance for Rutgers-Newark as she worked into and then out of trouble in the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings before Carleton finally pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.

Anna Lauko (Sr./Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay), Natalie Maurice (Jr./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), Maddie Sherwood (Sr./Tinley Park, Ill./Victor Andrew), and Brooke McKelvey (Fy./West Linn, Ore./West Linn) had the base hits for Carleton.

GAME 2 RECAP

The bats woke up in time for game two as Carleton pounded out 14 hits, including four extra-base knocks. The Knights scored multiple runs in the first, second, third, and fifth innings en route to the mercy rule.

Lauko, Maurice, and Maris Daleo (So./Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) each went 3-for-4, while Sherwood was 2-for-2 with a walk. Maurice totaled a game-high four RBI.

Sherwood also broke into the win column, tossing 4.1 innings of shutout ball with six strikeouts while yielding only three singles and a walk.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS

Carleton has two games on the docket for Thursday, beginning with a 1:45 p.m. ET contest against Ripon College, followed by a 3:45 p.m. affair with Framingham State University.
