Knights Swept by No. 22 St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team was swept by No. 22 University of St. Thomas, 8-2 and 10-1 (5 inn.) The Knights fell behind early in both games and were never able to recover. Rookie Micaela LaRose (Waconia, Minn./Holy Family) paced Carleton with three hits on the day.

The Tommies (26-6, 13-1 MIAC) demonstrated why they are one of the pre-season favorites in the MIAC, jumping out to a 7-0 lead before an out was recorded in the second inning. Jenny Forster (So./Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) came on and tossed 5.0 innings of one-run relief, but the damage had already been done.

LaRose and Kaitlin Bagley (So./Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) each went 2-for-3 in the contest. Their back-to-back singles in the fourth led to the Knights’ two runs. LaRose scored on a wild pitch, and Brooke McManigal (So./Bothell, Wash./Singapore American School) singled home Bagley for the other tally.

The Tommies scored six times in the opening frame of game two, taking advantage of a pair of errors to plate four unearned tallies in the inning. St. Thomas tacked on two more runs in the second and added a two-run homer in the third.

Lindsay Szper (Fy./Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Chadwick School) had two of Carleton’s (6-23, 5-9 MIAC) six hits and scored the Knights’ lone run.

The schedule makers didn’t do Carleton any favors as the Knights next travel to conference co-leader Gustavus Adolphus College for two games on Thursday, April 19.
