NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sunday afternoon marked Senior Day at Ele Hansen Field, and the Carleton College softball team celebrated the occasion with a sweep of visiting Bethel University by scores of 5-0 and 5-3. Prior to the national anthem, seniors Madi Emenheiser (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) and Mia Orans (San Francisco, Calif./Piedmont) were recognized in a special pre-game ceremony for their contributions to the program.

Sophomore Sam Kile (Elk Grove, Calif./Consumnes Oaks) was credited with both wins for the Knights, improving her record to 11-7 on the season. In game one, she totaled 11 strikeouts while tossing her third shutout of the season. As an encore, she added 5.1 innings of 1-run relief work in the second contest.

GAME 1
The opener was scoreless until Orans stroked a RBI double to the left-centerfield gap in the fourth inning. Ground balls by Emily Boxrud (So./Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) and Molly Steinberg (Jr./Santa Monica, Calif./Harvard Westlake) allowed two more runners to score. An inning later, sacrifice flies by Natalie Maurice (Fy./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Kile chased home the final two Carleton runs.

Kile struck out six of the first nine batters she faced and finished with 11 Ks, the second-highest total of her career.

GAME 2
Bethel (9-20, 5-12 MIAC) scored twice in the top of the first, but Carleton (15-15, 8-10 MIAC) responded in the second inning, utilizing seven singles to scratch out a five-run rally as Orans, Ari Zuaro (Jr./Scotch Plain, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood), Anna Lauko (So./Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay), and Katie Eppard (Jr./Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) had RBIs.

With Kile back in the circle, the Knights closed it out for their fifth doubleheader sweep of the campaign.

BY THE NUMBERS: Lauko went 3-for-4 in game two, lifting her season batting average to .488, tops among MIAC players this year.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “It was a great weekend of weather and softball!” said Carletonhead coach Amy Erickson. “We are continuing to improve and grow with each game and playing some great ball against really tough competition.

“We are playing really sound fundamental defense, getting solid outings from our pitching staff, and getting production up and down the lineup…all the ingredients for success.”

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton hosts Saint Mary’s University on Tuesday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m. The Knights will then close the regular season at Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday, April 29.
