ELMHURST, Ill. – After stumbling in its opening set of the campaign, the Carleton College volleyball team quickly got things squared away and won twice on the opening day of the 2012 season. The Knights posted a four-set victory over Albion College (Mich.) then swept Whitman College (Wash.) on the first day of play at the Elmhurst Invitational.

Carleton (2-0) dropped the first set versus Albion, 14-25, but got the nerves out and played more aggressively, prevailing by scores of 25-23, 25-13, and 25-18.

Senior Jessa Youso (Virginia, Minn./Virginia) paced the offensive attack with 13 kills, while rookie Lexi Papke (Strum, Wis./Regis) chipped in eight more.

Alicia Flatt (So./Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) totaled 41 assists, the fourth-highest total of her career. Libero Camille Benson (Fy./Savage, Minn./Burnsville) collected 19 digs in her collegiate debut.

The momentum from game one’s triumph carried over to the nightcap as the Knights defeated the Missionaries by a 25-22, 25-18, and 25-23 margin.

This time it was Karen Halls (So./Edina, Minn./Edina) tallying a team-best eight kills, with Youso adding seven to her daily total. Liz Groesbeck (So./Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) was a factor in the service game, notching four aces. Flatt handed out 26 assists, while Benson and Chloe Nelson (Jr./Madison, Wis./West) figured in 14 digs apiece.

On Saturday, the Knights will open play versus Bethany Lutheran College followed immediately with a contest against Carroll University.
