NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Lucy Stevens (Sr./Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) became the fourth player in Carleton College volleyball history to reach 1,000 career kills as she totaled 29 kills while the Knights went 1-1 in a pair of matches on Saturday.

Carleton opened the day with a 3-1 victory over UW-River Falls by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-21. The Knights then went the distance before falling, 3-2, to Valley City State University by a 28-26, 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 11-15 count.

“I'm so proud that Lucy can be honored by reaching the 1,000-kill milestone in the Carleton record book,” said Carleton head coach Heidi Jaynes. “She has worked hard each and every day in practice to improve and is not only a phenomenal player but an even better person. She'll be the first to say a big thank you to all her teammates who passed a great ball and gave her a great set in order to get each kill.”

Stevens, whose career total stood at 974 kills entering Saturday, increased that total by 11 during the UW-River Falls match, including the match-winning point. She also contributed five digs, two blocks, and two aces.

Newcomer Abby Loe (Fy./Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) paced Carleton in kills during the opener, notching a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. Lauren Pak (Fy./Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) dished out 39 assists.

The Knights had little time to rest before the day’s second match began with a nail-biting first set that featured 19 ties and eight lead changes. Carleton avoided a pair of set points and claimed the opener, 28-26, thanks in part to four kills by Stevens.

With the scored knotted at 15-15 in the second game, another Stevens kills sparked the Knights on a 10-2 run to close out the set, 25-17.

Stevens reached the 1,000-kill plateau midway through the fourth set, but the Vikings were able to force the match to a fifth set and ultimately captured the victory. Stevens finished the contest with a match-best 18 kills and added eight digs.

Katherine Miles (Sr./Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) supplied 14 kills, and Loe posted her second double-double with a team-best 22 digs and 11 kills. Pak smashed her career best with 52 assists.

Carleton will head west for three matches next weekend at the ACM tournament hosted by Colorado College on September 8-9.
