NORTHFIELD, Minn. – On a crisp fall evening situated on the eastern banks of the picturesque Cannon River, West Gymnasium lit up as the Carleton College volleyball team made quick work of visiting Concordia College in three sets (25-22, 25-22, 27-25) to notch its first MIAC victory of the season.

Neither team proved able to establish a lasting lead in the opening stages of the first set. Deep into the frame, a mini-run manufactured by Carleton (4-7, 1-2 MIAC) forced a Concordia timeout at 17-15 in favor of the Knights. The Cobbers (3-9, 1-3 MIAC) bounced back quickly, however, earning the next four points to reclaim the lead. Following a Knight timeout, the momentum shifted again, and everything started clicking for the home squad. Carleton dominated on both sides of the ball and raced to a 25-22 set victory.

The Knights maintained their strong play in the second, sprinting out to a commanding lead of 13-7. Little by little the Cobbers chipped away at the deficit, however, pulling within one at 21-20. It was the clutch play of Carleton that eventually won out, as the Knights took five of the next seven points to win the set, 25-22, and earn a convincing 2-0 match lead.

Concordia fought desperately to stay in the match, battling back and forth with Carleton over the first half of the third set. After the frame reached a crucial 22-22 tilt, the Cobbers executed a clean kill and prompted a Carleton timeout. Talking things over in the huddle clearly made a difference, as the Knights quickly won the next two points to pull within one point of the match. Carleton overcame some late Cobber resistance and ultimately took the set 27-25 to close out the match.

Carleton was led offensively by Lucy Stevens (Sr./Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School), who smacked down 15 kills. Elyse Wanzenried (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn.) and Abby Loe (Fy./Apple Valley, Minn.) each totaled eight kills in the effort. Lauren Pak (Fy./Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) tallied a match-high 39 assists. Defensively, senior Katie Tritschler (Los Altos, Calif.) collected 23 digs.

Haley Cuppett led the Cobbers with nine kills.

The Knights turn around quickly for the annual alumni game at West Gymnasium on Saturday at 12:30, followed by a home bout against the College of Saint Benedict at 3:00. A live audio and video broadcast will be made available via Knights Online.
