NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College volleyball team did its part and then some to extend Hamline University’s now 18-match losing streak, dispatching the visiting Pipers in four sets (25-13, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20) to notch an important MIAC victory on Wednesday evening at West Gymnasium. Katie Tritschler (Sr./Los Altos, Calif.) amassed a career-best 40 digs, while fellow senior Lucy Stevens (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) led the offensive attack with 21 kills.

The Knights (6-10, 3-4 MIAC) got off to a hot start in the first set, quickly jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Hamline (3-20, 0-7 MIAC) began to piece things together at that point, however, winning five of the next six points to tie the score at seven apiece. Again, Carleton took control and claimed six of the following eight points to go up 13-9 and force a Hamline timeout. It was no contest from there, as the Knights raced rapidly to a 25-13 set victory.

Attempting to rebound from the setback, the Pipers worked their way to a 6-3 advantage early in the second set. From there, the two teams virtually traded points until the Knights called a timeout, trailing 13-18. Hamline’s newfound momentum proved to be too much to overcome, however, and the visitors evened the match up with a 25-20 set win.

Carleton responded by going up quickly in the third, prompting a Hamline timeout at a 9-5 tilt. The break did little to help the Pipers, and the Knights extended their lead to seven at 15-8, resulting in yet another Hamline timeout. All the Pipers could do was slightly chip away at the deficit down the stretch, and Carleton went on to take the set by a 25-16 tally.

After the fourth set reached an 8-8 deadlock, Hamline initiated a relatively short run to claim a 14-10 advantage. The Knights fought back to within one (15-16) to force a Hamline timeout at a crucial moment in the set. Carleton finally retook the lead at 20-19 and didn’t look back. The hosts came through in clutch time to put the finishing touches on the match with a 25-20 fourth-set victory.

Stevens spearheaded the Carleton attack, finishing with a match-best 21 kills while hitting .259. Fellow senior Katherine Miles (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) contributed to the winning effort with ten kills, hitting .429 in the process. Spreading the ball around for the Knights was Lauren Pak (Fy./Moraga, Calif./Campolindo), who totaled a match-high 44 assists and 14 digs. On the defensive side, Tritschler amassed 40 digs (another match-best) along with two aces.

Next up for the Knights is another home battle against Martin Luther College on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. A live audio and video broadcast will be made available via Knights Online.
