MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Less than 24 hours after it notched an important MIAC victory over St. Kate’s, the Carleton College volleyball team suffered a three-set defeat at the hands of conference foe Augsburg University, falling by scores of 25-7, 25-22, and 25-15 on Saturday.

The Auggies (18-8, 7-2 MIAC) threw the Knights all they had in the opening set. After the hosts jumped out to a 7-0 lead, a service error into the net finally put Carleton (8-11, 4-5 MIAC) on the board. It did not stem Augsburg’s flow, however, and the home team quickly took the first set by a 25-7 tally.

Carleton turned the tables in the following set. Playing much more competitive volleyball, the Knights worked their way to a 9-6 advantage to force an Augsburg timeout, taking it to the Auggies for the first time in the match. Rebounding well were the hosts, however, as they initiated a five-point streak to go up by two at 11-9. After some intense play and multiple lead changes, the scoreboard read 21-21. And Augsburg turned it on at just the right time. The defending MIAC champions went on to claim the frame, 25-22, and go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, it looked like the Auggies were regaining their first-set form, at least in the early going. They sprinted to a 4-0 lead before the Knights broke through, again on a service error. This time, though, Carleton recovered. The visitors took control of the flow and eventually prompted an Augsburg timeout, leading 12-9.

But the Auggies could not be shaken. They regrouped and won the next five points to retake the lead and establish their edge at 14-12 heading into a Carleton timeout. The Knights eventually stopped the bleeding, notching a point and trailing 13-16, but it was too late. Augsburg dominated down the stretch and went on to win the set, 25-15, and close out the match.

Carleton was led offensively by Elyse Wanzenried (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn.), who totaled eight kills in the contest. Lucy Stevens (Sr./Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) chipped in with six of her own. Lauren Pak (Fy./Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) amassed 19 assists, and Katie Tritschler (Sr./Los Altos, Calif.) collected 15 digs.

The Knights will take on Bethel University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Arden Hills. Links to live video and live stats can be found at Knights Online.
