ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – In a must-win final road battle of the season, the Carleton College volleyball team could not maintain its strong start and fell short against Bethel University in four sets (23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19) on Wednesday. That loss ended the Knights hopes of chasing down a spot in the MIAC playoffs.

In order for Carleton’s playoff hopes to stay alive, two things needed to happen: a victory for the Knights at Bethel and a Saint Mary’s triumph at St. Olaf. Those results would have set the stage for a play-in game between Carleton and St. Olaf on Friday evening at West Gymnasium. Unfortunately for Carleton, neither of those required results came to fruition on Wednesday.

After quickly falling behind 11-5 in the opening set, the Knights (8-12, 4-6 MIAC) called a timeout to talk things over. The break helped, as Carleton took the next four points to cut the deficit to two at 11-9. Following a period of back-and-forth play, the Royals (17-6, 6-4 MIAC) took a timeout of their own, leading 17-15, in an attempt to regain their early momentum.

Bethel’s timeout had the opposite effect. Carleton strung together an impressive run to capture a crucial 20-18 edge late in the set. Following several lead changes, the Knights conjured up some incredibly clutch play to win a thrilling first set by a 25-23 tally.

In the following frame, Carleton led in the early going until Bethel turned it on and grabbed a 10-7 advantage to force a Knight timeout. The Royals gradually extended their lead Bethel rolled to a 25-16 set victory to even the match at one set apiece.

The two teams played evenly in the beginning stages of the third, and the score eventually reached an 11-11 deadlock. It was then that the Royals began dictating affairs. Down the stretch, the hosts claimed 14 of the final 19 points and put the set away, 25-16, to pull within one game of the match.

Bethel’s newfound momentum proved to be too much for the Knights to handle. The Royals eventually closed out the match and eliminated Carleton from playoff contention with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.

Offensively for the Knights, Faith Skinner (Jr./La Crosse, Wis./Central) led the way with nine kills. Three players each totaled seven kills in the match: Abby Loe (Fy./Apple Valley, Minn.), Lucy Stevens (Sr./Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School), and Elyse Wanzenried (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn.). Carleton got 32 assists from Lauren Pak (Fy./Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) and 21 digs from Katie Tritschler (Sr./Los Altos, Calif.).

The Knights will wrap up their season at home against crosstown rival St. Olaf College on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m. Live stats along with a live audio and video broadcast will be made available via Knights Online.
