NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Led by its four seniors, the Carleton College volleyball team closed the 2017 campaign with an exciting five-set victory over cross-town rival St. Olaf College. The Knights won the first two sets, dropped the next two, and rallied in the final set to prevail 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 16-25, and 15-13.

“What a great match!” said Carleton head coach Heidi Jaynes. “I’m so excited for our seniors to end their careers with an emotional win and for each of them to play such a vital role in that match.”

The contest concluded the collegiate careers for Anna Flitner (Sr./Presho, S.D./Lyman); Katherine Miles (Sr./Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South); Lucy Stevens (Sr./Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School); and Katie Tritschler (Sr./Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos). That quartet was recognized during a pre-match ceremony then willed the Knights (9-12, 5-6 MIAC) to their sixth consecutive victory over St. Olaf (21-10, 7-4 MIAC).

With the opening set tied at 12-12, Carleton closed the period on a 13-5 burst. Midway through the second stanza, the Knights used a 5-0 spurt to build a 14-8 advantage and held off the Oles, 25-20, for a two sets-to-none lead. Late in that second set, Tritschler recorded her 1000th career dig, becoming the 13th player in team history to reach that milestone.

St. Olaf avoided the sweep with a 25-20 result in the third set and later knotted things up by pulling away late in the fourth to prevail 25-16.

In the deciding fifth set, St. Olaf built a 12-10 lead, but Carleton responded with a 5-1 spurt to close the set, the match, and its season with a 15-13 result.

Overall, Carleton hit .201 while limiting St. Olaf to only a .126 attack percentage in a contest that featured 31 ties and 19 lead changes.

Stevens and Elyse Wanzenried (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) recorded 13 kills apiece, while Faith Skinner (Jr./La Crosse, Wis./Central) added 10 kills. Abby Loe (Fy./Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) narrowly missed a double-double as she posted 14 digs to go along with nine kills.

Tritschler finished with a match-high 28 kills, giving her 1,013 over her time at Carleton, which moved her into 12th in team annals. Lauren Pak (Fy./Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) contributed a match-best 44 kills.
