NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College volleyball team (3-0) wrapped up the first weekend of play with two more victories on Saturday, posting a 3-1 triumph over Martin Luther College and a 3-2, come-from-behind win against UW-River Falls.

“I was impressed all weekend long by our ability to battle back and win some tough points,” said Carleton head coach Jacki Smith. “Our serve receive looked strong and confident, and we believe that is the key to being successful. It speaks to the character of this team that we forced two game fives and were able to finish. We still have a lot to improve on, but I'm pleased with the opening weekend effort and energy we played with.”

Elyse Wanzenried (Sr./Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) spearheaded the attack against Martin Luther, finishing with a career-best 14 kills while hitting a blistering .500 for the match. She added seven digs, four blocks, and three service aces.

Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) and Olivia Powell (Jr./Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Chadwick) added eight kills each, while Faith Skinner (Sr./La Crosse, Wis./Central) contributed seven more. Inger Shelton (Fy./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) tallied match-highs of 25 assists and four aces.

The Knights trailed 7-6 in the opening set but put together a 16-2 run and eventually prevailed 25-14. Carleton raced out to a 20-6 lead in the second game, capturing a 25-13 result. Tied at 18-18 in the third set, Martin Luther closed the game on a 7-2 run, but the Knights jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth and never looked back en route to a 25-15 score.

In its final match at the St. Olaf-Carleton Invitational, Carleton faced a 2 games-to-1 deficit against UW-River Falls. Skinner keyed the comeback as she notched five of her 14 kills in the critical fourth game, while the Knight defense registered seven blocks in the same set.

After sending the match to a fifth game, Carleton used the home-court momentum to build a quick 8-1 lead which was enough to hold off a late Falcon rally and secure the 17-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12 victory.

Wanzenried picked up her second double-double of the tournament, totaling 13 kills and 11 digs. Powell accounted for five kills and figured in a whopping eight blocks, the most by a Knight in nearly two seasons.

Shelton doled out a season-best 27 assists, while Natalie Mun (Fy./Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) added 15 assist and 10 digs. Celeste Chen (Jr./Yorba Linda, Calif./Valentia) led the defense by bringing up 19 balls.

Carleton travels to the ACM Tournament on Sept. 7-8 in Appleton, Wis. Opponents there include Beloit College, Ripon College, host Lawrence University, and Lake Forest College.
