Knights Go 1-1 on Day One of Lawrence Invite

APPLETON, Wis. – The Carleton College volleyball team opened up play with a 1-1 record on day one at the Lawrence University Volleyball Invitational Friday afternoon, sweeping Beloit College 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 in the opener, before falling to Ripon College 19-25, 25-27, 25-15, 25-18, 15-11 during the evening session.

Against Beloit, Carleton trailed only once in the match while dispatching the Buccaneers in straight sets. The senior duo of Faith Skinner (LaCrosse, Wis./Central) and Elyse Wanzenried (Minnetonka, Minn.) tallied 12 and 11 kills each to lead the Carleton attack. Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn.) contributed nine kills and four aces, while Olivia Powell (Jr./Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Chadwick) added four kills and a block.

Wanzenried hit .556 in the match, while the Knights hit .277 as a team.

Inger Shelton (Fy./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) and Natalie Mun (Fy./Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) split the setting duties, recording 17 and nine assists respectively.

In the Knights second match of the day, Carleton took a quick 2-0 lead in the match after the first two sets, but couldn’t close out the Red Hawks, eventually falling in five sets, 19-25, 25-27, 25-15, 25-18, 15-11.

Skinner, Wanzenried and Loe all reached double-figure kill totals in the night cap, carding 14, 12 and 12 kills respectively.

Shelton tallied 19 assists in the match, while Mun added 14. Celeste Chan (Jr./Yorba Linda, Calif./Valentia) led all participants with 25 digs in the match.

The Knights will close out play in Appleton with two matches Saturday, first against tournament host Lawrence at 10 a.m., followed by an afternoon match against Lake Forest at 2 p.m.
