ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College volleyball team ran its win streak to five matches after picking up a pair of triumphs on day one of the Macalester Invitational. The Knights swept Alverno College (25-9, 25-14, 25-20) then dispatched Beloit College by a 3-1 margin (25-17, 15-25, 25-20, 25-15).

Carleton (9-1) hit a scorching .406 in the opening match, the program’s best performance since Oct. 20, 2014.

The Knights raced out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back in claiming the opening set. The second game was close at the midpoint before a kill by Elyse Wanzenried (Sr./Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) sparked the Knights on a 15-7 streak to close the set. A 6-0 run very early in the third set put Carleton in front to stay in game three

Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) collected a match-high 10 kills on 18 attempts with no errors for a .556 attack percentage, the best figure in her collegiate career.

Olivia Powell (Jr./Palos Verdes, Calif./Chadwick) hit .545 as she collected six kills on 11 attempts with a team-best four blocks. Inger Shelton (Fy./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) and Natalie Mun (Fy./Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) dished out 15 and 10 assists, respectively. Celeste Chen (Jr./Yorba Linda, Calif./Valencia) totaled 10 of Carleton’s 26 digs in the contest.

Against Beloit, the Knights trailed 9-8 in the opening set before one of Wanzenried’s team-best 15 kills ignited a 12-3 Carleton run. The Knights maintained that advantage in claiming the set. The Buccaneers used a 10-3 run early in the second set to gain the upper hand and eventually even the match at a game apiece.

The next set featured six ties and four lead changes. With the score knotted at 18-18, Shelton had back-to-back service aces that sparked the Knights’ game-ending 7-2 run to secure the pivotal third set.

While the third set was close, the fourth started even tighter as the scoreboard registered nine ties and four lead changes leading up to a 15-14 Carleton edge. Jona Plevin’s (Sr./San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker) kill started a 10-1 run for the Knights that finished off the game and the match.

Loe joined Wanzenried in double figures with kills, totaling 11, while both Knights amassed four service aces. Powell added nine kills, and Faith Skinner (Sr./La Crosse, Wis./Central) contributed seven more. Shelton and Mun split the assists at 19 apiece, while Chen and Wanzenried led the defense with 10 digs apiece.

Carleton will wrap up play at the Macalester Invitational with a 10 a.m. match against Grinnell College on Saturday, Sept. 15. Links to live video and stats can be found via Knights Online.
