NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Despite taking a nationally ranked team to the brink in the second set, the Carleton College volleyball team dropped its 2018 home opener to No. 12-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in three sets (25-14, 25-22, 25-10).

The Gusties (11-2, 2-0 MIAC) roared out of the gates in the opening set, taking five of the first six points. Shortly thereafter, they held an 8-3 advantage and forced an early Carleton (10-2, 1-1 MIAC) timeout. There was little the Knights could do to counter the power of the visitors in the first frame, as Gustavus hit .346 in the stanza and raced to a 25-14 first-set victory.

Carleton turned things around in the second set. The Gusties won the frame’s first three points before the Knights fought back to a gridlock at 9-9. Taking their first lead of the match at 10-9 and forcing a Gustavus timeout for the first time at 12-10, Carleton looked to be surging at a crucial time. However, the visitors rallied back and grasped a 19-17 lead, forcing a Knight timeout. They used their newfound momentum to put the set away by a 25-22.

Gustavus carried over the momentum into the next set and quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead, prompting a timeout by Carleton coach Jacki Smith. The No. 12-ranked team in the nation continued to build its lead as the frame progressed, eventually cruising to a 25-10 win to put the finishing touches on the Knights and the match.

Elyse Wanzenried (Sr./Minnetonka, Minn.) paced the Knights with nine kills and added four digs in the effort. Teammate Faith Skinner (Sr./La Crosse, Wis./Central) wasn’t far behind with eight kills of her own. First-year Inger Shelton (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) distributed the ball for the Knights and totaled 11 assists. On the defensive side, Celeste Chen (Jr./Yorba Linda, Calif./Valencia) chipped in with eight digs.

Kate Holtan notched a match-best 11 kills for the Gusties. Two-time MIAC Player-of-the-Year Nora Holtan totaled 30 assists.

The Knights return to action for another home battle this Saturday, Sept. 22 at 3:00 p.m. against the University of St. Thomas. Links to video and live stats will be available on Knights Online.
