NEW ULM, Minn. – In its final non-conference matchup of the year, the Carleton College volleyball team took down Martin Luther College in three sets (25-23, 26-24, 25-18) to snap the Knights’ losing streak and gain some important momentum heading back into MIAC play.

Carleton (11-7) and Martin Luther (6-19) traded blows in the early going until the score reached a pivotal 10-9 tally in favor of the away team. From there, Carleton rode a 5-1 run to a 15-10 edge and forced a Martin Luther timeout. The home squad claimed the first point out of the break, but Carleton quickly got back on track and began to extend its lead.

Eventually, Carleton earned a set point at 24-17, but not before Martin Luther nearly completed a furious comeback. They reeled off six consecutive points to make it a one-point game. Faith Skinner (Sr./La Crosse, Wis./Central) picked up the kill for Carleton, notching a clutch point to put the set away, 25-23.

The following set mirrored the first, as Carleton worked hard to reach a 10-9 lead after some high-quality play from both teams. Martin Luther chipped away at the deficit and made it a 16-16 game before building their own narrow lead.

The tight set featured seven ties and 13 lead changes as neither side led by more than three points at any point during the set.

Late in the set, the home team held a slim 23-21 advantage, but Carleton fought back behind some big hitting from Skinner and Elyse Wanzenried (Sr./Minnetonka, Minn.) to claim a 26-24 result that give the visitors a 2-0 match lead.

After an early 4-4 deadlock in the third frame, Carleton launched a 6-0 streak to take a commanding 10-4 lead. Martin Luther fought back, however, and went on a 6-2 run of their own, making it a 12-10 game in favor of Carleton. Some back-and-forth play later, Carleton found themselves up by two at 20-18. The visiting team took over, securing the next five points to put the finishing touches on the set, 25-18, and the match.

Skinner took the offensive helm for Carleton with a match-high 12 kills, and she also amassed six digs. Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn.) nearly reached double digits in kills as well, finishing with nine. Rookie Inger Shelton (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) collected a match-best 27 assists, and Celeste Chen (Jr./Yorba Linda, Calif./Valencia) totaled 16 digs on the defensive side of the ball, tops in the contest.

Ruth Buchholz and Kati Aguilar had 11 and 10 kills for Martin Luther, respectively.

The Knights get another chance to try their hand at MIAC play against St. Catherine University at home on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. Links to live video and stats will be available on Knights Online.
