NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Despite fighting hard to keep its winning streak alive, the Carleton College volleyball team fell to Augsburg University in three sets (25-21, 25-14, 25-18) on Friday night at West Gymnasium.

The Auggies came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a quick 9-3 lead to force a Carleton timeout. Their lead reached 11-4 before the Knights mounted an impressive comeback. A 6-1 run by Carleton made it a two-point game at 12-10 in favor of Augsburg.

The visitors began to stretch their lead again, but the Knights erased the deficit quicker this time around. Carleton got within one several times, including at 21-20, but that was as close as they would get. The Auggies held off the hosts late and claimed the opening set by a 25-21 tally.

As in the first, Augsburg sprinted out of the gates to earn an early 6-1 lead. The advantage grew to 18-5 before the Knights initiated a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to eight. Unfortunately for Carleton, the gap was too large to overcome, and the Auggies went on to take a two-set lead with a 25-14 frame win.

The third set witnessed yet another hot start from the Auggies, as they capitalized on several Carleton service errors and raced out to a 10-4 lead. From that point on, the two teams traded blows, but the Knights needed more than that to attempt the comeback. Augsburg eventually closed out the match with a 25-18 third-set win.

For the Knights, Faith Skinner (Sr./La Crosse, Wis./Central) tallied the most kills with nine. Fellow senior Elyse Wanzenried (Minnetonka, Minn.) wasn’t far behind, as she amassed eight kills and added 10 digs in the effort. Facilitating was Inger Shelton (Fy./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla), who collected a team-best 26 assists.

Kayla Gjerde led the Auggies with 12 kills. Morgan Malley chipped in with 30 assists.

The Knights will play their final home game of the regular season and honor seniors Skinner, Wanzenried, and Jona Plevin (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker) on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m. against Bethel University. Links to live video and stats will be available on Knights Online.
