NORTHFIELD, Minn. – On Senior Night at West Gymnasium honoring Jona Plevin (San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker), Faith Skinner (La Crosse, Wis./Central), and Elyse Wanzenried (Minnetonka, Minn.), the Carleton College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Bethel University (25-12, 25-22, 25-16).

The Royals (23-6, 7-3 MIAC) had the hot hand early on, securing a 9-3 lead to force a Knight (12-9, 2-8 MIAC) timeout. Bethel extended its advantage to nine before Carleton began chipping away at the deficit. Getting it within seven at 19-12, the Knights looked to be picking up some steam, but the Royals reeled off six consecutive points to put the set away by a 25-12 tally.

Bethel kept its point streak alive into the second frame, jumping out to a quick 3-0 advantage. Carleton got back into the fray in no time, however, and battled back and forth for the bulk of the set until the home squad tied things up at 18. The Royals took the next two points, but the Knights responded well again and pushed it to 21 apiece.

Relying on the power of their top hitter, the visitors won three of the next four points to earn a set point. Carleton called a timeout to talk things over, but Bethel took care of business immediately after the break, notching a 25-22 second-set victory to come within one game of the match.

Continuing the trend of impressive starts, the Royals shot out to a 7-2 lead to prompt a Carleton timeout. The Knights didn’t back down, though, and brought it within 8-7 by taking five of the next six points. From there, Bethel started adding to its lead again, initiating a 4-0 run to go up by five at 12-7. That momentum propelled them the rest of the way, and the Royals went on to win the set, 25-16, as well as the match.

Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn.) was the lone Knight in double figures in kills. She finished with 10, tied for match-best. Wanzenried and Olivia Powell (Jr./Palos Verdes, Calif./Chadwick) each tallied seven kills in the effort. Wanzenried led the team with a match-high 11 digs. Inger Shelton (Fy./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) totaled 20 assists.

Maria Claflin paced the Royals with 10 kills. Hannah Wilhite chipped in with 31 assists.

The Knights will wrap up their 2018 campaign with an away match on Friday, Oct. 26 against cross-town rival St. Olaf College at 7:00 p.m. Links to live video and stats will be available via Knights Online.
