NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Just one day after suffering a deflating loss in Saint Paul, the Carleton College volleyball team bounced back with a decisive three-set victory (25-16, 25-14, 26-24) over Macalester College at West Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

Neither team was able to establish a significant lead in the early stages of the opening set until the Knights (5-9, 2-3 MIAC) manufactured a short 4-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. Even then, the Scots (5-14, 0-5 MIAC) answered with a 4-0 run of their own, cutting the deficit to one. A set already characterized by streaks saw Carleton create yet another, this one of the 6-0 variety, to grab a convincing 20-13 advantage. From there, the Knights wasted no time on their way to a 25-16 frame victory.

The break did little to slow Carleton’s roll, as the hosts quickly jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second. The Knights gradually increased their lead throughout the set until they eventually claimed the frame by a 25-14 tally to go up 2-0 in the match. Carleton hit an impressive .455 as a team in the second, compared to Macalester’s clip of .147.

Putting up more of a fight in the third set, the Scots worked their way to a 12-8 lead, putting some pressure on the Knights to respond. Respond they did, albeit gradually, as the set eventually reached a crucial 23-23 tilt. Macalester notched a point to force a Carleton timeout within one point of winning its first set. Whatever the Knights discussed during the break resounded well, however, because they collected the next three points (26-24) to secure the sweep.

Offensively for the Knights, Lucy Stevens (Sr./Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) and Faith Skinner (Jr./La Crosse, Wis./Central) took charge, finishing with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Lauren Pak (Fy./Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) collected a match-best 38 assists. Senior Katie Tritschler (Los Altos, Calif.) amassed 22 digs on the night.

The Knights will play their third game in four days on Friday night, as they’ll visit Saint Mary’s University at 7:00 p.m. A live audio and video broadcast will be made available via Knights Online.
