Knights rally to weather Storm in five sets

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Elyse Wanzenried (Sr./Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) totaled a team-high 12 kills along with 11 digs and six blocks to help the Carleton College volleyball team complete a five-set comeback victory over Simpson College. The Knights captured the season opener by scores of 25-17, 15-25, 18-25, 25-22, and 15-10.

Carleton claimed the opening game but then hit a combined .038 in dropping the next two sets while the Storm attacked at a .300 clip over the same span.

Olivia Powell (Jr./Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Chadwick) totaled 12 kills over her first two seasons with the Knights but accumulated 11 kills in this match. She notched a pair of kills late in the fourth set to given Carleton a 25-22 result that forced the contest to go the distance.

The fifth set was knotted 10-10 before Powell contributed her final kill of the afternoon, a point that sparked a 5-0 rally to seal the victory.

Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) contributed 10 kills, while Celeste Chen (Jr./Yorba Linda, Calif./Valentia) recorded a squad-best 14 digs. First-years Inger Shelton (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) and Natalie Mun (Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) split the setting duties, totaling 20 and 17 assists, respectively.

Carleton hit .153 for the match and collected 11 service aces to go along with 13 blocks.

The Knights will face Martin Luther College (11:00 a.m.) and UW-River Falls (3:00 p.m.) on day two of the St. Olaf-Carleton Invitational. Saturday’s action will be held at West Gym.
