ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Carleton College volleyball team attempted to hand host College of Saint Benedict its first MIAC loss of the season, but the visiting team came up empty-handed in three sets (25-8, 25-6, 25-22) on Wednesday evening.

In the opening set, the Knights (10-5, 1-4 MIAC) worked to quell the firepower of the Blazers (15-5, 5-0 MIAC), but there was little the visitors could do. Saint Benedict roared out to an early 6-0 lead to force a Carleton timeout. Following the break, the Blazers continued to extend their advantage and eventually put the first frame away by a 25-8 tally. The hosts hit a scorching .571 in the game, compared to .037 for the Knights.

Saint Benedict carried over its dominant play into the second set and used an early 13-0 run to take full control of the set before putting the finishing touches on a 25-6 decision.

After two frames controlled by the Blazers, the Knights flipped things the third time around. Again, Saint Benedict jumped out to an early lead at 5-1, but Carleton chipped away at the deficit and made it a two-point set at 17-15 in favor of the hosts. A mini-burst by the Blazers forced a Carleton timeout at 20-16, but the Knights responded well again and got within two at 22-20. From there, however, Saint Benedict did just enough to hold off the surging Knights and closed out the set and the match with a 25-22 win.

For the Knights, Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn.) reached double digits with 10 kills while hitting a solid .308. She added two blocks in the match. Senior captain Faith Skinner (La Crosse, Wis./Central) put down seven kills to complement Loe’s effort.

Inger Shelton (Fy./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) moved the ball around for Carleton and finished with 14 assists. Defensively, Tegan Carlson (So./Benton City, Wash./Kiona-Benton City) collected eight digs to lead the team.

Hunter Weiss smashed 11 kills to pace the Blazers. Katie Koch finished with 36 assists.

The Knights will return to action on Friday, Oct. 5 at home against Saint Mary’s University at 7:00 p.m. It will be Carleton’s annual Homecoming match, and links to live video and stats will be available on Knights Online.
