ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College volleyball team struggled to find a rhythm on Wednesday, dropping a three-set MIAC match to Hamline University (25-18, 25-18, 25-12) at Hutton Arena.

Neither team could create any separation in the beginning stages of the opening set, and the sides were knotted at 11-11. However, a 7-1 Hamline (9-10, 1-6 MIAC) run midway through the frame opened things up. Carleton (10-7, 1-6 MIAC) suddenly found itself trailing 18-12. From there, the deficit was too large to overcome, and the Knights dropped the first set by a 25-18 tally.

In the following set, it was Carleton who had early, close leads. After the Knights led by a score of 11-8, the Pipers initiated a 7-2 to earn a 15-13 advantage. The two teams found another gridlock at 17, but it was all Hamline after that. The home team laid claim to eight of the next nine points to put away the set, 25-18, and head to the third with a convincing 2-0 match lead.

The Pipers put their momentum to good use in the third frame. They jumped out to an early lead of 8-3 to prompt a Carleton timeout. The Knights kept it close for a while, but after a timeout with Hamline leading 15-11, the Pipers rallied for eight consecutive points to pull away. Hamline went on to take the set, 25-12, as well as the match.

For the Knights, Abby Loe (So./Apple Valley, Minn.) and Olivia Powell (Jr./Palos Verdes, Calif./Chadwick) spearheaded the offense with eight kills each. Senior Elyse Wanzenried (Minnetonka, Minn.) was right behind them, finishing with seven kills.

Inger Shelton (Fy./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) amassed a team-best 22 assists, and Celeste Chen (Jr./Yorba Linda, Calif./Valencia) totaled six digs to lead Carleton.

Morgen Coleman and Sydney Larson each collected nine kills in the match for Hamline.

The Knights will wrap up nonconference play for the season on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Martin Luther College. Links to live video and stats will be available on Knights Online.
